It was a weekend of back-to-back match play for the eight schools participating in the inaugural Play Golf Inter School Premiere Match Play.
The Saturday round was challenging due to intermittent rain showers and heavy cloud cover, but it did not stop Home School Global from sweeping La Salle Greenhills. Villaroman Golf Academy almost swept PAREF Schools, but Yunju An and Joseph Cabrera managed to square the match from Charles Serdenia and Joseph Bernos.
Despite the rains, there was still unending excitement because rival schools were coincidentally pitted against each other through a lottery draw. Ateneo swept all four matches against La Salle Zobel. Due to a rain delay, two matches were left unfinished. In the spirit of sportsmanship, the captains of the Blue Eagles and Green Archers discussed the situation, and the Green Archers conceded the two remaining matches, in which the Blue Eagles were 3up through 14 and 5up through 13, respectively.
Things turned out differently in the British School Manila versus International School Manila matches. The captains decided to continue their match on a different day for the best ball format, with ISM leading 1up through 15. However, ISM conceded the aggregate match, in which BSM was up by 3 through 14. BSM’s Reese Ng and Cara Ong need to at least tie the best ball match against ISM’s Ace Pascual and Leon Reyno to secure the full game points for the day.
On Sunday, the rounds began under bright and sunny conditions, providing a different course atmosphere than the previous day. BSM emerged victorious with a 3-1 win against La Salle Greenhills. Sebastian Darjuan and Monte Andaman secured a point for LSGH in the alternate shot format against Armand Copok and Robyn Ng of BSM. However, Scott Ng, playing solo for the BSM team, snatched the win 5&3 in the best ball format against Harry Sales and Mackee Burgo of La Salle Greenhills. Chaz Limketkai and Kyle Ng won their high-low match 7&5 while Annika Santos and Lance Tan secured the last point for the Lions in their aggregate match 4&3.
Villaroman Golf Academy and International School Manila split the matches 2-2, with VGA team members Peyton Coyuito and Tiffany Bernardino winning the alternate match and Charles Serdenia and Santi Asuncion winning the best ball match. ISM claimed victory in the high-low match with Ace Pascual and Sandes Vasquez while Pallavi Aiyer and Alice Jeong won the aggregate matches.
De La Salle Zobel had a decisive win against PAREF Schools, with Tristan Padilla and Vincent Illagan winning 9&8 in the best ball format, Robbie Roberson and Troy Nagaya 5&4 in the alternate format, Rafa Leonio and Gab Handog 6&5 in the high-low format, and Santino Magtalas and Aidan Pizzaro 4&2 in the aggregate format.
Ateneo closed the games with a 2.5-1.5 win over Homeschool Global. Javie Bautista, Juanton Cruz, Lujo Gomez, and Luis Espinosa contributed to Ateneo’s two points, with Aenzo Sulaik and Inigo Gallardo adding half a point to the team’s total. Rafa Manaol and Tyra Garingalao took the other half-point for Homeschool Global. Raj Crisostomo and Race Manhit put up a tough fight against the formidable tandem of Kami del Mundo and Lucas de Guzman, but the latter team managed to prevail at the 18th hole, earning a point for Homeschool Global.
